Valdek Castle

Valdek Castle is a Gothic castle ruin in Neřežín with remaining fortifications featuring a bergfried tower and fragments of two palaces. The surviving walls and structures display typical features of Gothic design from its period.

The castle was founded around 1260 by the Buzic family and passed through several owners over time. King Wenceslaus IV acquired it in the early 1400s, marking a significant shift in the site's importance.

During the 1800s, notable Czech writers including Karel Hynek Mácha and Božena Němcová came to explore the ruins. Their visits reflect how the site drew the interest of important literary figures during a significant period of cultural awakening.

The castle grounds are managed by Military Forests and Farms organization, which currently restricts public access to protect the site. Visitors should check conditions beforehand, as preservation of the structures takes priority.

Near the fortifications below the castle sits a distinctive stone formation that resembles a fossilized seascape. This geological feature is frequently overlooked by visitors, yet it adds an unexpected layer of interest to the site.
