Kaple Jména Panny Marie, Baroque chapel in Mladotice, Czech Republic

The Kaple Jména Panny Marie in Mladotice is a central Baroque chapel on a hexagonal ground plan with concave walls and projecting corners, built 1708–1710 to a design by Jan Santini Aichel. Its windows sit on the axes of the walls, and the over-lit lantern makes the vault and lantern stars read as a single twelve-pointed Marian star. The walls are yellow, the corners, window surrounds and main cornice brick red.

The chapel replaced a Romanesque chapel of St Hedwig, acquired by the Plasy Cistercians in 1205; a later chapel of St Catherine was demolished in 1707. Abbot Eugen Tyttl had Santini's new chapel built on the same spot: the foundation stone was laid on 2 May 1708 and the abbot blessed it on 14 September 1710. After the monastery's abolition in 1785, the villagers bought the chapel in 1800 for 107 gulden and 55 kreuzer.

The chapel's name links the Cistercian devotion to the Virgin Mary with the baroque Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, instituted in 1683. Villagers chose the Virgin Mary as their patroness and bought the chapel in 1800, committing the community to its upkeep. Masses were held several times a month until the monastery was dissolved in 1785.

The chapel stands in Mladotice, north of Plzeň, on the site of the former village rychta; its renovated exterior contrasts with the two neglected wings of the adjoining farmyard. Services were held here several times a month until the monastery was dissolved in 1785, and occasional Masses were later served by secular priests. The building is still used for religious purposes, so visitors should time their look inside around worship.

Santini's authorship was only documented by a written record found during the 2009 repairs. Abbot Evžen Tyttl laid the foundation stone on 2 May 1708 with the whole convent present, and he visited the chapel fifteen more times before the end of 1710.
