Loretokapelle, Baroque chapel in Rumburk, Czech Republic.
The Loretokapelle is a Baroque chapel in Rumburk featuring ornate stucco work, prophet sculptures, and wall paintings depicting scenes from Mary's life. The complex includes a cloister and a Holy Staircase as architectural highlights.
Construction took place between 1704 and 1707 after Prince Anton Florian of Liechtenstein visited the pilgrimage site in Loreto, Italy and decided to build a similar sanctuary. His visit inspired the creation of this chapel as a religious monument in his territory.
The chapel serves as a pilgrimage destination dedicated to Mary, centered around a wooden Black Madonna statue from 1694 that believers credit with healing powers. Visitors come to pray before this figure, which became the focus of local religious devotion.
The chapel is open Tuesday through Saturday with guided tours available to explain the pilgrimage complex. Checking tour availability beforehand is helpful since they provide better understanding of the site and its different areas.
The crypt beneath the Holy House was originally meant as a burial place for the Liechtenstein family but holds only one person: sexton Anton Bräuer, buried there in 1763. This unexpected use of the underground space tells a story of changed plans.
