Podkovák Nature Reserve, protected area in Czech Republic
Podkovák is a nature reserve in Lesná that protects roughly 5.6 hectares of peatbog habitat with waterlogged soil. Located at about 708 meters (2,325 feet) elevation at the source of Lesní potok stream, the reserve contains bog pine forests, carnivorous sundew plants, and other wetland species adapted to acidic, nutrient-poor conditions.
The reserve was officially designated in 1975 to protect the peatbog and its original plant communities from damage. The bog landscape itself took thousands of years to form through the accumulation of partially decomposed plant matter in waterlogged conditions.
The reserve protects rare bog-adapted plants and wetland ecosystems that have shaped the landscape for centuries. Visitors can observe these specialized plants and understand how local communities once depended on such natural areas for resources and survival.
Use the short educational trail, which extends roughly 100 meters around small bog ponds and provides safe views of the landscape without disturbing protected areas. Always stay on marked paths since venomous snakes inhabit the grassland and the waterlogged ground can be dangerous if left unattended.
The bog contains carnivorous sundew plants that trap and digest insects to obtain nutrients in the nutrient-poor wetland environment. This unusual adaptation demonstrates how specialized plants have evolved to survive in conditions where other species cannot.
