Zbořený Kostelec Castle, Gothic castle ruins in Týnec nad Sázavou, Czech Republic.
Zbořený Kostelec is a Gothic castle ruin that stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sázava River. The remains include remnants of gates, stone walls, and a round watchtower that rises above the debris.
The castle was built in the 13th century and functioned until Jiří z Poděbrad's forces captured it in the middle ages. The conquest marked the beginning of its decline into the ruins visible today.
The name Zbořený Kostelec means demolished Kostelec, reflecting how locals historically perceived this place after centuries of decay. The ruin remains embedded in the identity of the surrounding community and the landscape.
Access to the ruins is via a green marked trail starting from the parking area behind the bus stop on road 107, a walk of about 300 meters. The terrain is uneven and steep in places, so sturdy footwear helps when exploring the rocky site.
The castle had three entrance gates positioned throughout the complex to provide comprehensive surveillance of the surrounding territory. This multi-gate design was a deliberate defensive strategy during medieval times.
