Zderad Column, Gothic monument in Brno-střed district, Czech Republic
The Zderad Column is a Gothic stone monument standing about 12 meters tall on Křenová Street in the Brno-střed district. It occupies a memorial park and is partially obscured by trees and a former customs house.
The monument was named after knight Zderad, an advisor to Czech King Vratislav II, who died near this location in 1091. The column received this designation as a memorial to this medieval nobleman and his tragic fate.
The monument bears an inscription marking its status as a cultural landmark and contains the earliest written reference to the city of Brno in historical records.
The column stands on the right bank of the Svitava River near Křenová Street and is easily reached on foot. The surrounding park provides benches where visitors can observe the area without needing to hurry.
The column was originally used as a boundary marker for medieval town laws and possible river crossing points for travelers. During restoration work between 1863 and 1865, the monument was moved from its original location to its present site.
