Green Tower, Renaissance tower in Pardubice-Staré Město, Czech Republic
The Green Tower is a Renaissance foregate and gate tower in Pardubice-Staré Město, the tower rising 59 m to a late Gothic roof of three tiers of dormers, eight pinnacles and a tall central spire topped by a golden finial with a ten-pointed star. The foregate, raised one storey by Jiřík Olomoucký after 1538, carries a Renaissance gable with pilasters and arcading.
The tower was part of the medieval fortification system that protected Pardubice and served as a main entrance to the city center. It represents a key phase in the development of the city's defensive structures.
The tower houses exhibitions presenting the stories and legends tied to Pardubice through artifacts and educational materials. Visitors can learn about the narratives that shaped the city's identity.
The tower is reached on foot via stairs to the viewing level, and the foregate holds an exhibition on the gate's history with archival maps, plans, photographs and plaster models of the gate and St Bartholomew's Church. The gate marks the start and end of the marked Vilém z Pernštejna Trail through the reserve.
The relief on the foregate's facade, placed by the Pardubice councillors in 1903, was designed by Mikoláš Aleš. It depicts the heraldic legend of the lords of Pardubice, whose coat of arms the city uses as its own.
