Židlochovice Castle, Baroque castle in Židlochovice, Czech Republic.
Židlochovice Castle is a two-story baroque château in Židlochovice, southern Moravia, built around a U-shaped courtyard with two flanking wings. A chapel, a former riding hall, and a large park are all part of the complex.
The site began as a water-ringed defensive structure in the 14th century, built along an old trade route, before Friedrich of Žerotín transformed it into a Renaissance residence. Later renovations gave it its current baroque and Empire-style appearance.
The interior rooms display paintings by Dutch masters alongside hunting trophies that reflect the tastes of the noble families who once lived here. Walking through these spaces gives a direct sense of how aristocratic life looked in this part of Moravia.
The castle functions as a conference center and hotel, so access to the interior may vary depending on events taking place at any given time. The park around the building is open throughout the year and is easy to explore on foot.
In 1784, the first hot air balloon flight in Moravia took off from the castle grounds, making it an unexpected landmark in aviation history. This shows how open the owners of that time were to new ideas coming from western Europe.
