Zvičina, Mountain summit in Krkonošsko-jesenická Highlands, Czech Republic.
Switschin Berg is a summit in the Krkonošsko-jesenická Highlands of the Czech Republic, located within a protected landscape area in Bohemia. A stone observation tower stands at the top, making it easy to spot from a distance among the surrounding forested hills.
The summit was developed as a hiking destination in the early 1900s, when walking clubs from nearby towns began marking trails and building small facilities. The stone tower at the top dates from that era and has remained standing since.
The name Switschin Berg reflects the German-speaking communities that once lived in this part of Bohemia before being displaced after World War II. Hikers today still encounter this layer of history in the place names scattered across the surrounding hills.
Several marked trails lead to the summit from different starting points, so you can choose a route that suits your pace. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the paths can be uneven or muddy depending on the season.
On a clear day, the tower at the top offers views of three separate mountain ranges at once: the Giant Mountains, the Broumov Walls, and the Orlické Mountains. Few spots in the Bohemian highlands give a view that spans such a wide arc of the surrounding landscape.
