Zábřeh na Moravě Castle, Renaissance castle in Zábřeh, Czech Republic
Zábřeh na Moravě Castle is a Renaissance structure featuring balanced proportions and characteristic architectural details from its era. It occupies the main square of town and currently serves as a municipal administrative center.
A fortress existed here by the late 14th century, protected by a high stone wall and a deep moat with a drawbridge. The Tunkl family made it their seat after 1442 and rebuilt it in late Gothic style, and Jan of Boskovice had it raised by one storey with four halls around 1569. A sandstone coat of arms of Georg Tunkl dated 1478 survives in the passage.
In the castle passage stands a sandstone coat of arms of the Tunkl family, carved with two fish and the inscription "Georgius Tunkl senior de Brniczko et in Zabrzeh" and the year 1478, originally set above the castle gate. The building has housed the municipal office since the town bought it in 1849.
The castle sits on the main square and is easy to reach on foot when exploring the town center. As it operates as a municipal building, visitors should check ahead about which areas may be accessible or when tours might be offered.
In the castle passage hangs a sandstone coat of arms carved in 1478 for Jiří Tunkl of Brníčko, showing two fish and the Latin inscription "Georgius Tunkl senior de Brniczko et in Zabrzeh". It was originally set above the castle gate. A tunnel from the castle collapsed in 1928 near today's small park and was filled in.
