Berchtold Castle, Château in Vidovice, Kunice, Czech Republic
Berchtold Castle is a château in Vidovice, part of Kunice in the Central Bohemian Region. The representative building with a farm and brickworks was separated from Chlum in 1877; the Milner family carried out major construction work in 1904, and since 1906 the residence has been called the "newly built castle with a park". Today it serves as a hotel and sports centre, with a rural museum on the ground floor.
A manor in Vidovice is first recorded in 1388, held by the family "z Vidovic"; it apparently vanished in the second half of the 15th century. In 1877 Eleonora Brzorádová and Rudolf Kainz received a separate Vidovice estate, and the Milner family carried out the largest building works in 1904. From the second half of the 20th century the Czechoslovak army used the castle; after 1990 it passed to the municipality and three years later was sold to a private firm.
The ground-floor museum was founded in 1935 by mayor Josef Oldřich and his son MUDr. František Oldřich, and its exhibits keep the original arrangement and labels from that year. The collections range from coins dating to 1012 and paper money of 1880–1945 to glassware, guild relics, hunting trophies and bullets removed from soldiers' bodies in World War I.
The château stands in Vidovice, part of Kunice in the Central Bohemian Region, southeast of Prague. The grounds hold a hotel, a restaurant, a sports centre and the village museum, so allow time to move between them. The museum exhibition is on the ground floor.
The castle's name comes from the Berchtold noble family of Uherčice, one of its later owners. The name was adopted in 2005 after a coat of arms of Count Otokar Berchtold was found during the reconstruction.
