The Basilica of the Assumption and Saints Cyril and Methodius is an 86-metre-long single-nave church with a transept and two square towers on the facade facing the main courtyard. A row of chapels with lean-to roofs runs along the nave, and a slender lantern turret rises above the dome at the crossing. The facade is pale yellow with pilasters between the arched windows.
This religious structure was established in 1228 as part of a Cistercian monastery complex. Over the centuries, it underwent major reconstruction under architect Giovanni Pietro Tencalla's direction.

The church was shortened by about 14 metres during its Baroque rebuilding: the Romanesque west front with its stepped portal was demolished, reducing the length from 100 to 86 metres. The floor was also raised to the level of the surrounding terrain, and crypts were built beneath ten of the side chapels.
