Arboretum Brno, Educational arboretum in Ponava, Czech Republic.
Arboretum Brno is an educational garden spanning 11 hectares in Ponava with over 4,000 orchid species, 2,000 perennials, and 4,000 types of woody plants. The collection is organized in climate-controlled greenhouses and open beds throughout the grounds.
The garden was founded in 1938 near Mendel University and moved to its current location in 1968. The relocation happened because the university needed space to grow.
The garden displays plants from the Mediterranean, California, China, Australia, and New Zealand across five themed zones. You can see how different growing regions sit side by side in one place.
You can enter through three gates: the main entrance from Tř. Generála Píky street, the lower gate near Boby center, and a footbridge for students. Plan enough time to explore all areas comfortably.
The collection holds 300 different tillandsias and 350 cultivars of large-flowered irises in specialized greenhouses. These uncommon varieties are often overlooked by most visitors.
