Žižkovské divadlo Járy Cimrmana, Theater in Žižkov district, Prague, Czech Republic
Žižkovské divadlo Járy Cimrmana is a theater in Prague's Žižkov district, housed in a 19th-century building on a residential street. The auditorium has around 230 seats spread across ten rows on the main floor and four rows on the balcony.
The building was put up in 1875 as a three-story structure with a courtyard wing and originally held a tavern and a dance hall. It was later converted into a theater as the neighborhood changed around it.
The theater takes its name from Jára Cimrman, a fictional Czech genius who supposedly came close to many great discoveries but was always overlooked by history. Every show follows the same format: a mock lecture about Cimrman's life comes first, then a short play.
The theater sits in Žižkov, a neighborhood well connected to central Prague by tram and metro. Performances tend to sell out, so booking seats ahead of time is a good idea.
In the 1880s, part of the building was briefly used as a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, making it the only religious space in the area for a short time. Today, nothing in the building hints at that former use.
