Valdická brána, City gate in Jičín, Czech Republic
Valdická Gate is a medieval city gate in Jičín featuring a Gothic vaulted passageway and a wooden gallery in its upper section. The structure was restored during a major renovation and stands today as a distinctive landmark at the city's edge.
Construction of the gate began in 1568 under Vilém Trčka z Lípy and incorporated remains of an older 14th-century tower into the new structure. The gate took its present form through modifications over the centuries that adapted it to the city's changing needs.
The gate is the sole remaining original entrance to the city and shows how Jičín protected its boundaries in medieval times. Walking through the passage, you can sense how important this spot was for daily control of traffic entering the city.
Access to the upper rooms is via a spiral staircase, while the former keeper's residence now serves as a reception area. The building is freely accessible from outside and offers good viewpoints over the surrounding city edges.
Architect Josef Oppolzer blended 19th-century design principles with medieval elements by adding a distinctive pyramidal roof. This modern reworking created a blend of different periods that still defines the gate's appearance today.
