Valdštejnovo náměstí, Central square in Jičín, Czech Republic
Valdštejnovo náměstí is a rectangular plaza in Jičín featuring continuous arcades on all sides that provide shelter and frame the public space. Church spires and the Renaissance gate mark its boundaries, creating a defined urban room with clear architectural edges.
The square evolved from a medieval marketplace into its current Renaissance form during the 17th century under Albrecht von Wallenstein's leadership. Italian architects designed the enclosed plaza with arcades, establishing the architectural character that remains today.
Three monumental fountains on the square represent religious devotion and classical mythology through public art. These works reveal how the city expressed its identity through decorated water features.
The square operates as a functioning market space with regular Saturday morning trading sessions throughout the year. The arcades provide shelter from weather, and the flat surface makes it easy to walk and explore.
The Renaissance Valdice Gate stands 52 meters tall, the only surviving gate from the original three city entrances, and dominates one side of the square. This solitary tower serves as a visible reminder of the city's medieval defensive walls and gates.
