Lom u Devíti Křížů, Sandstone quarry in Havlovice, Czech Republic
Lom u Devíti Křížů is a sandstone quarry near Havlovice with walls composed of kaolinitic-quartz sandstone from the Middle Triassic period. The extraction site displays multiple rock layers that reveal the geological history of the region.
The quarry supplied stone during medieval times for the construction of nearby Vízmburk castle. These blocks remain visible in the structure of that regional fortress today.
Scientists discovered the first dinosaur footprints in Czech territory at this location, including an 18-centimeter-wide three-toed print from a predatory dinosaur.
The site is difficult to access because it is located in a remote area and remains in active operation. Visitors should check conditions beforehand and bring appropriate gear for uneven terrain.
The first recorded dinosaur footprints found in Bohemian territory were discovered at this quarry, including a three-toed track from a meat-eating creature. The rock walls also preserve ancient mud cracks and plant material dating back roughly 210 million years.
