Hornické muzeum Ostrava, Mining museum in Ostrava-Petřkovice, Czech Republic
Hornické muzeum Ostrava is a mining museum in the former Anselm mine that has underground tunnels extending 250 meters deep. Inside are original workplaces, machinery, and tools from different eras of mining operations.
The museum opened in 1993 on the grounds of the closed Anselm mine and is now the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic. The site marks the end of coal extraction in this region and its transformation into a cultural space.
The place lets you see how miners lived and worked through original locker rooms and an authentic 1960s train that visitors can ride. You get a sense of what daily life underground felt like.
The grounds are spacious and include sports facilities, camping areas, and restaurants alongside the museum. Plan enough time to explore the underground sections and ride through the grounds on the train.
The museum displays a collection of mining rescue equipment including breathing apparatus that shows how safety technology evolved over time. This exhibition reveals the dangers workers faced underground.
