Brtnice Castle

Brtnice Castle is a Renaissance structure perched on a hilltop with several interior courtyards and multiple buildings spanning different construction periods. The complex displays both early medieval elements and later Renaissance additions throughout its facades and layout.

The lords of Brtnický began construction in 1410, and the castle remained in their family until 1623, when the Italian Collalto family acquired it and carried out major reconstruction. This Italian intervention brought significant architectural changes to the site.

The castle reflects how Czech noble residences transformed from medieval fortifications into comfortable family homes during the Renaissance, a shift visible in its layered architecture. Visitors can see this evolution in the different building periods that shaped the structure.

The castle sits on a hilltop and interior visits are not currently possible. Visitors can explore the exterior grounds and appreciate the architecture from outside, with the hilltop location offering good views over the surrounding landscape.

The grounds contain an English-style landscaped park laid out in 1817 that surrounds the buildings with shaped gardens and woodland paths. This romantic garden creates a peaceful contrast to the castle's substantial stone architecture.
