Old synagogue, synagogue in Třebíč
The Old Synagogue is a Gothic Revival building that stands out among surrounding houses with its tall walls and simple design. Visible brickwork and tall windows mark its construction from an earlier period and show characteristics of this architectural style.
The building was constructed in the 17th century as a prayer house for the Jewish community and was restructured higher in the 18th century. After World War II and decline of the community, it was converted into a Hussite church in the 1950s.
The name Zámostí refers to the old Jewish quarter of Třebíč, established since the 14th century. The tight layout of small houses and quiet corners still shows today how the Jewish community lived together and maintained its traditions here.
The building is located in the heart of the Zámostí quarter and is easily accessible on foot. Note that you may need to schedule an appointment to view the interior, as it is not constantly open to visitors.
The synagogue was originally built taller but was deliberately lowered in the 18th century to appease local authorities. This adaptation shows how the Jewish community had to moderate its presence to coexist peacefully with its neighbors.
