Bon Repos, Baroque château in Čihadla, Czech Republic.
Bon Repos is a Baroque château in Čihadla with a main lodge, several subsidiary buildings, and various structures distributed across forested grounds. The complex includes a Chinese pavilion decorated with Asian-themed ceiling paintings, along with a chapel and meditation pyramid.
The estate was founded in 1715 by Count František Antonín Špork as La Maison de Bon Repos, taking its name from a French concept of rest and retreat. The founder built multiple structures to develop it into a complete complex with religious and residential components.
The site became a creative workplace in the 1800s when composer Bedřich Smetana taught music here from 1844 to 1847. His presence shaped the estate's reputation as a gathering place for artistic pursuits.
The property accommodates events with up to 200 guests and offers overnight lodging in the Old Castle section. The forested surroundings allow visitors to explore on foot the various buildings and grounds throughout the complex.
A Chinese pavilion built around 1770 stands on the grounds and displays ceiling paintings with Asian scenes. This structure feels like a window to distant cultures and shows the 18th-century fascination with exotic architecture.
