Jemnice Castle, Baroque Revival château in Jemnice, Czech Republic

Jemnice Castle is a four-winged château with arcades around an inner courtyard, standing on the edge of Havlíčkovo náměstí near Náměstí Svobody. It grew from a stone castle with a trapezoidal plan and three round corner turrets, and some arcade pillars survive in the east wing.

The building started as a Gothic fortress in the 13th century and was later rebuilt as a Renaissance residence. Its current form came from major renovations in the 18th century that gave it the Baroque appearance you see today.

The castle served as a seat for noble families and shaped life in the town for centuries. Today you can see how different owners arranged the rooms and what traces they left behind.

The castle sits in the center of Jemnice and is easy to reach on foot from the town square. Check opening hours before your visit as they may vary seasonally, and ask about guided tours if you want to learn more about the interior.

The castle's west wing with its tower and trapezoidal fortification was likely finished before Jemnice's first mayor took office, and a royal mayor's presence spurred further building in the early 14th century, including at least one tower found by archaeologists.
