Věznice Horní Slavkov, Gefängnis in Tschechien
Věznice Horní Slavkov is a correctional facility located in the town of Horní Slavkov in the Czech Republic. Opened in 1958, it holds approximately seven hundred inmates and includes separate wings for different prisoner categories, including those with mental health concerns and those requiring higher security.
The site's history begins with the establishment of labor camps from 1949 onward, managed by the Ostrov camps administration and employing workers in the uranium industry. The Prokop camp, the first of these facilities, was founded on July 2, 1949 and eventually developed into the prison that exists today.
The place carries the history of early postwar labor camps in its structure and physical layout. The buildings and their arrangement today reflect this past and form a functional whole that reminds visitors of difficult times.
The facility is located on the edge of Horní Slavkov and is marked by sturdy walls and secure gates. The place functions as an organized complex with clear structures, where daily life is governed by strict rules and established routines.
An escape in October 1951 from camp XII remains a defining moment in the history of this place. Eleven prisoners attempted to flee, during which a guard was seriously injured and five of the escapees were shot during their attempt.
