Hotel Avion, Functionalist hotel in Brno, Czech Republic
Hotel Avion is a ten-story functionalist building in Brno with a reinforced concrete frame and large windows distributed across a ceramic facade. The structure is notably narrow, only around 8 meters wide, yet rises about 40 meters tall, giving it a striking vertical character.
Architect Bohuslav Fuchs designed and built Hotel Avion between 1926 and 1928, replacing an older single-story inn on the site. The project represented a novel solution to accommodating modern lodging on a very constrained parcel.
The building is recognized as a national cultural monument and demonstrates how 1920s architects worked creatively within tight spatial constraints. Visitors can observe today how functionalist design makes efficient use of the narrow plot.
The building houses 37 rooms, a restaurant, a cafe, and a museum available for visitors to explore. Guided tours are offered regularly and allow you to learn more about the architectural details and history of the place.
The hotel features a distinctive vertical space design with rounded staircases and tiered galleries that connect different levels. This clever layout demonstrates how the architect maximized the tightest space to create flow and spatial connection.
