Koldům, Residential building in Horní Litvínov, Czech Republic
Koldům is a large residential building in Horní Litvínov, built 1948–1950 and completed in 1958 to designs by Václav Hilský and Evžen Linhart. Two angled thirteen-storey wings holding flats flank a seven-storey central section that once housed a nursery, kindergarten, laundry, canteen and shops. The pale facades carry rows of identical windows and bands of dark red and white panels, with "HOTEL" and "KOLDŮM" mounted in dark letters.
The design won the 1947 architectural competition by Václav Hilský and Evžen Linhart, but construction ran from 1948 to 1950 and the house was only completed in 1958. It was built for 1,400 workers of the chemical combine at Záluží u Mostu; seven such houses were planned, yet only this one was realised. The project won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale.
The name Koldům shortens Kolektivní dům, collective house, and the facade carries the mounted letters "HOTEL" and "KOLDŮM". The middle section now holds a restaurant, while the former hotel closed and some spaces await new use. The building is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The building stands in the north-eastern part of Litvínov, on the road toward Lom and Loučná. The middle section now houses a restaurant, while the hotel has closed; the swimming pool behind the building still operates. Some former communal spaces remain unused and await new purposes.
The design won a gold medal at the Triennale of Applied Arts in Milan. The original plan counted seven such collective houses for the chemical works at Záluží; only this one was built, and the project ran 150% over budget.
