Kolínské tůně, Natural monument in Kolín, Czech Republic.
Kolínské tůně is a protected natural monument with multiple water pools formed along the Elbe River, hosting diverse plant and animal species. The site includes former river channels and surrounding floodplain forests that together create a rich wetland ecosystem.
The area received official protection status in February 1985 to preserve the natural features of the former river meander and surrounding floodplain forests. This protection acknowledged the ecological importance of a wetland shaped by the Elbe River's movements across centuries.
The site forms part of the local landscape where water and forest merge into a natural setting that visitors experience directly while walking through. Over time, this area has become a refuge for plants and animals that feels quieter and less disturbed than surrounding regions.
The site is accessible to visitors through designated paths, best explored in calm conditions for observing wildlife and plants. Spring and early summer are ideal times to visit when the area shows peak natural activity.
The site hosts populations of three protected plant species, including water lilies that thrive in the various water pools. Beyond the vegetation, it is also critical habitat for amphibians and reptiles found at few other locations in the region.
