Hradiště u Černovic, Natural monument in Černovice, Czech Republic
Hradiště u Černovic is a protected natural area on a forested hilltop near Černovice with exposed siliceous rock outcrops and old quarry walls. The landscape clearly shows how stone extraction changed the southern part of the original hilltop.
The hilltop was first settled in the Stone Age and later fortified during the Iron Age. The site remained important to people in the medieval period as well.
The settlement shows traces of people living here across many centuries, from early times through the medieval period. Walking through the site, you can sense how different generations chose this hilltop as a home.
You can reach this site by following a marked hiking trail from Chomutov, though the climb up the hilltop is moderately steep. Wearing sturdy footwear and allowing extra time for the walk is advisable.
Stones quarried from this site were used to build a major railway line connecting towns in the region. This link between the natural site and industrial history remains visible to visitors today.
