Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Gothic structure in Krupka with a presbytery positioned at an angle to the nave, creating a distinctive floor plan. A bell tower stands beside the main building, completing this uncommon architectural arrangement.

The structure was built in 1488 following a major town fire in 1479 and replaced an earlier church that had occupied the site since before 1383. The bell tower was completed between 1490 and 1493, marking the gradual restoration of the town's religious infrastructure.

The church served as a spiritual center for the mining community that worked in the surrounding region. Its presence reflects how faith and daily work were closely intertwined in medieval mining towns.

The building is easy to locate and provides a good overview of Gothic architecture in the region. Visitors may find the interior open to view, but it is wise to check opening times before arriving.

Inside the church stand baroque holy stairs built between 1735 and 1739, created specifically for pilgrims to use in their devotional practices. These stairs allowed visitors to perform a distinctive form of worship directly within the sanctuary.
