Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque structure sitting on a hilltop, featuring a nave, side aisles, and a prominent altar space. A modern glass roof allows daylight to enter the interior while protecting the historic walls from the elements.

Construction took place between 1723 and 1733, establishing it as a major Baroque work in the region. A Soviet projectile struck the building in 1945, causing a fire that destroyed the roof completely.

The church has served as a pilgrimage site since the 17th century, drawing people from across the region to participate in religious ceremonies and events. It remains an important spiritual center for the local community.

The church is generally open to visitors on a regular basis, though specific times apply for tower access and guided tours exploring the restoration work. Wear sturdy shoes as the hilltop location involves climbing and uneven ground.

After the 1945 destruction, the building stood roofless and exposed to the elements for decades. In 2007, architects installed an innovative glass structure that floods the interior with light while safeguarding the damaged walls.
