Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Plzeň

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Gothic structure with cross-ribbed vaults and multiple chapels dedicated to different saints inside. The interior blends Gothic elements with a Baroque main altar based on a Rubens painting.

The church suffered major damage from Hussite forces and later from Mansfeld's army, requiring multiple reconstructions afterward. The rebuilding stretched over decades and faced significant delays due to the chaos of the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century.

The Chapel of Saint Barbara holds 15th-century frescoes that show one of the oldest known depictions of Plzeň woven into biblical scenes. These paintings reveal how local artists of the time blended religious themes with details from their own city.

The church is located in the old town and easily walkable from the city center, with several bus stops nearby. Visiting is generally possible during regular hours, though it is best to check opening times in advance to see the interior.

The main altar features a work based on Rubens' famous painting of the Assumption, creating a striking bridge between Gothic architecture and Baroque art. This blend of two artistic styles often goes unnoticed but shapes much of what visitors see when they step inside.
