Vrškamýk Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Kamýk nad Vltavou, Czech Republic.
Vrškamýk Castle is a Gothic ruin on a rocky hilltop above the Vltava River near Kamýk nad Vltavou in the Czech Republic, with surviving stone walls and remnants of its defensive layout still visible. The site is made up of several sections spread across the hillside, and a wooden observation tower has been added to give a broader view of the surrounding landscape.
The castle was founded in the 13th century and served for several generations as an administrative center for the Bohemian rulers who controlled this stretch of the Vltava. Over time it lost its role, was abandoned, and gradually fell into the state of ruin that visitors see today.
The ruin sits on a rock directly above the river, which makes it easy to understand why the site was chosen to watch over river traffic below. Standing among the old walls, you can still read the logic of the layout and how each section was meant to defend the next.
The ruin is reached on foot via marked trails, and the terrain on the hillside can be uneven and steep in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The wooden observation tower on the site offers a good viewpoint, though it requires climbing a short set of stairs.
Alongside the old walls, the grounds also have a medieval-themed playground, a maze, and a sheepfold, which makes this ruin an unusual stop for families traveling with children. The combination of old stonework and hands-on outdoor activities in the same space is not something you find at most castle ruins in the region.
