Krásná Stráň, hillside in Czech Republic
Krásná Stráň is a natural monument covering about 20 hectares on the southeastern slope of a hill that rises from 215 to 347 meters. The terrain features dry-adapted oak forests, shrubby vegetation, and rocky outcrops mixed with grasses and wildflowers.
This area was officially protected as a natural monument in 2003 to preserve its unique plant and animal communities. Long ago, a vineyard was established here by local landowners but was eventually abandoned, leading to reforestation and the development of the landscape we see today.
Local people have enjoyed this area for walks and nature observation for many generations. The rocky slopes and natural vegetation reflect the traditional landscape of the Czech hills, serving as a place where visitors can experience the quiet of open spaces.
The area is easily accessible on foot from nearby villages via marked trails that wind through wooded and rocky sections. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water with you, and watch your footing on uneven terrain since there are no facilities within the protected area.
The green lizard lives here in one of only two remaining populations in the entire Czech kras region. This impressively large and critically rare reptile can sometimes be spotted sunbathing on the rocks during warm days, making it a special find for nature watchers.
