Church of Saint John the Baptist, Gothic church in Jihlava, Czech Republic
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is a Gothic building with two prominent towers at the front, the northern one reaching considerable height. The structure features a classical three-part plan with a long nave and multiple side aisles.
The church was founded in 1256 and gained parish status in 1257 following consecration of the completed choir. This early establishment makes it one of the oldest religious buildings in the city.
The interior displays medieval wall paintings and several Baroque altars that add depth and richness to the sacred space. The ribbed vault structures spanning the three aisles create a harmonious spatial composition.
The building is easily accessible from outside and can be explored by visitors at various times. The best view of the two towers and Gothic facade is from the front or surrounding squares.
A special bell named Zuzana, cast in 1563, tells of support from city residents who together funded its creation. This bell in the tower symbolizes the deep connection between the community and its religious center.
