Church of Saint John the Baptist, Baroque church in Paštiky, Czech Republic
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is a Baroque building standing on a high terrace and distinguished by massive decorative cornices along its walls and tower. The square chancel and elaborate architectural details form a unified composition.
The building was designed by architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer between 1747 and 1753, replacing an earlier church that occupied the same site. This reconstruction shaped the religious life of the community for centuries to come.
The interior displays works by sculptor Ferdinand Ublaker and painter J. V. Spitzer, whose decorations reflect Rococo design throughout the space. The organ positioned in the gallery is a central feature of the artistic arrangement.
The building underwent extensive renovation between 2018 and 2019, with work on the roof, facade, and stained glass windows supported by European Union funding. Visitors will find the structure well maintained and all areas accessible.
Two granite figures known as the Paštiky Death guard the churchyard entrance and hold a special place in local history. These sculptures were stolen in 2020 but were later recovered and returned.
