Libín, Observation tower at Libín mountain near Prachatice, Czech Republic
Libín is an observation tower standing on a mountain ridge near Prachatice with a viewing platform that opens up to the surrounding landscape. The structure rises about 27 meters and sits at roughly 1100 meters elevation, providing sight lines across the Bohemian region and toward the distant Alpine range.
The tower was built in 1883 by the Austrian Tourist Club as a tribute to Rudolf, son of Emperor Franz Joseph I. This construction reflects the connection between mountain landscapes and Austrian nobility during the late 1800s.
The tower functions as a central gathering point for local outdoor enthusiasts who participate in regional hiking events throughout the seasons.
The tower is accessible via two marked trails: a shorter blue route of about 2 kilometers from the Sedlýcko parking area or a longer red path of about 5 kilometers. Both routes pass through wooded terrain and offer options depending on fitness level and available time.
On clear days, the viewing platform reveals multiple distant peaks and surprisingly the Temelín nuclear power plant far below. This unexpected sight line demonstrates just how elevated this location is and the vast distances one can survey.
