Liptáňský bludný balvan, Glacial erratic monument in Liptaň, Czech Republic.
Liptáňský bludný balvan is a large boulder of pink-brown granite sitting near Liptáňský Stream in a protected natural area. The rock was transported here by glaciers and left behind when the ice retreated.
This granite block was carried from Scandinavia during the Saale glaciation period and left here as the ice sheet retreated. Its location marks how far south the glaciers reached in prehistoric times.
The boulder represents a geological testament to the ice age migrations and received official protection status on April 26, 1966.
This natural monument is free to visit year-round and sits beside marked walking trails near Liptaň village. The boulder is accessible on foot across the railway line and easy to find in the local area.
The stone contains a special mix of minerals including feldspar and mica throughout its structure. Its precise origin from the north makes it an important marker of how far the ice age glaciers spread.
