Meandry Smědé, Nature reserve in Višňová, Czech Republic.
Meandry Smědé is a nature reserve with around 136 hectares of land shaped by a river system that winds back and forth. The area contains different habitats along the riverbanks and wetland zones that together form a complex ecosystem.
The area became a protected reserve in 1998 to preserve the natural river landscapes and water systems of the region. This decision was an important step in safeguarding the nature of Northern Bohemia from future changes.
The name comes from the Smědá River that winds through the landscape and shapes what you see. Visitors can observe the different habitats along the waterway, from the flowing water to the surrounding meadows.
The reserve can be explored on marked trails, but visitors should stick to the designated routes to avoid disturbing sensitive habitats. Sturdy footwear and readiness for wet conditions make sense, as many areas are boggy and marshy.
The reserve is home to four separate populations of a snail species that had not been recorded in the region for 25 years. This rediscovery is a rare case and shows how valuable the protected area is for species that reappear unexpectedly.
