Lávový proud u Meziny, Natural monument in Mezina, Czech Republic
Lávový proud u Meziny is a natural monument featuring columnar basalt formations exposed within an abandoned quarry. The site displays distinctive vertical stone columns that formed as molten lava cooled and fractured over time.
The basalt formation took shape approximately 1.8 million years ago during a period of volcanic activity in the region. Official protection status came in 1997 to preserve this geological record for the future.
The site reflects generations of quarrying work that shaped the local landscape and community economy. Today visitors can see how these activities left visible marks on the natural rock formations.
The best way to reach the site is by following a walking trail from Venus Mountain through Mezina village, with the monument about 400 meters from the bus stop. The area is accessible on foot and does not require specialized equipment.
The basalt columns display predominantly hexagonal cross-sections, a result of how the lava cooled in an orderly pattern. This natural geometric structure creates a visually striking honeycomb-like appearance.
