Oppidum Nevězice, Celtic archaeological site in Nevězice, Czech Republic
Oppidum Nevězice is a Celtic fortified settlement on the Hrad promontory with defensive ramparts and two entrance gates. The site overlooks what is now the Orlík reservoir and displays the physical remains of ancient fortification work.
The settlement was founded around 120 BC as a strategic trading post. A fire in the first century BC caused significant damage to the fortifications.
Archaeological excavations at the site revealed evidence of bronze casting activities and foreign ceramic products, indicating trade connections across Celtic territories.
The site is accessible from the northwest side and displays visible sections of the inner ramparts. Visitors should expect steep slopes and uneven ground when exploring the fortification remains.
This is the smallest oppidum in the Czech Republic, perched on slopes that rise steeply from the surrounding landscape. The site was dramatically transformed when the Orlík reservoir was created, submerging the river trade routes that once passed below.
