Malý Kosíř, protected area in Czech Republic
Malý Kosíř is a nature reserve near the town of Slatinice in the Czech Republic covering roughly eight hectares. The gentle hill is covered in dry grasslands and shrubby vegetation, with a wooden chapel on the summit and a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the surrounding Haná region.
The area was officially protected in 1993 to preserve its natural features. A stone cross on the hill dates to 1944, marking the area's long history, followed by the construction of the wooden chapel in 2018.
The name Malý Kosíř translates to "Little Basket" in Czech, referring to the hill's shape. The wooden chapel built in 2018 and dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua serves the local community as a place for reflection and remembrance of the area's heritage.
The hill has a gentle slope and is easy to climb, with marked paths and signage guiding visitors throughout. Wearing comfortable shoes and bringing water are recommended, as this makes for a pleasant short visit that is easily accessible from nearby towns.
The hill is known for hosting one of the largest populations of Vstavač kukačka (Cuckoo Orchid) in Central Moravia, a rare and protected orchid species. These special flowers and other specialized insects like the rare Prástevníka kostivalového butterfly make this site a gem for nature watchers.
