Palác Merkur, Art Nouveau palace in Old Town, Czech Republic
Palác Merkur is an eight-story building with granite cladding and two semi-circular porches anchoring the café area at street level. The structure combines a narrower front block facing the river with two longer side wings extending backward.
Insurance company Merkur commissioned architect Jaroslav Fragner to design this building, which opened in 1935. It marked a shift toward modern architecture in this part of the Old Town district.
The ground floor café serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors meet for coffee and conversation. The space bridges the building's past with everyday city life.
The location is accessible from nearby public transit stops and sits along a main street with clear signage. Inside, administrative spaces and dining areas occupy different floors, allowing visitors to move between levels freely.
The rooftop holds a hidden terrace with city views, a quiet space that many visitors overlook when focusing on street-level attractions. This upper retreat offers a different perspective of the surroundings.
