Gablenz's Obelisk in Trutnov, Military memorial in Horní Předměstí, Czech Republic

Gablenz's Obelisk is a 20-metre cast-iron monument shaped like an obelisk on Šibeník hill above Trutnov. A staircase inside leads to the top, which serves as an observation tower over the battlefield and the town. The monument bears the names of fallen officers and the losses of Austrian regiments.

The monument was erected in 1868 to honor an Austrian general and commemorate a military victory during the war between Austria and Prussia. This conflict was a turning point for the region of Bohemia.

The monument is named after an Austrian military commander and serves as a local landmark that residents recognize and reference in their surroundings. It reflects how the town maintains memory of its role in 19th-century conflicts.

The monument sits on a hilltop outside the town center, reached via a walking trail that connects several historical spots. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the approach path.

The crypt holds the remains of General Ludwig Gablenz (1814–1874), the Austrian commander at Trutnov. The 20-metre cast-iron obelisk also carries the names of fallen officers and the casualty counts of each Austrian regiment.
