Měnínská brána, Gothic city gate in Brno, Czech Republic
Měnínská Brána is a Gothic city gate built from stone blocks as part of Brno's medieval fortifications with multiple interior levels. The structure served both defensive and residential purposes after its initial construction in the 13th century.
Built in the 13th century as one of five original city gates, this structure was relocated to Měnínská street around 1293. The gate remained part of Brno's defensive system until the medieval walls lost their military importance.
The building houses a toy museum with historical dolls, furniture, and postcards gathered over several generations by curator Milada Kollárová. The collection represents items brought together by hand and displayed within the gate's rooms.
The gate is currently undergoing restoration and remains closed to visitors. You can still view the exterior and see details of the Gothic architecture by walking around the building during daylight hours.
The Navrátilová family operated a cheese production workshop inside the gate for four generations until warfare damaged the building in 1945. This family craft tradition ended abruptly when military conflict affected the structure.
