Pitkovická stráň, Natural monument in Prague 22, Czech Republic.
Pitkovická stráň is a protected area on the right bank of Pitkovický Stream, featuring rocky outcrops and specialized steppe vegetation. The site spans less than one hectare and supports a variety of plants and insects dependent on this specific habitat.
The area served as grazing land for sheep, goats, and cattle until 1947, while a nearby quarry operated until 1940. Its designation as a protected natural monument in 1969 aimed to preserve the rare plant species and habitats from further loss.
The site takes its name from the nearby Pitkovický Stream and displays the appearance of steppe grassland, a landscape type rarely seen in this region. The open spaces with their specialized plants shape the character of the place and show how natural diversity appears in the local area.
The best spot to observe the plants is along a wooden fence bordering the cycling path that starts from Pitkovice village and is easy to reach. Access is free, and the site is most rewarding to visit from late spring through early summer when flowers are in bloom.
The area harbors the rare Bohemian Pasque Flower and Czech Star-of-Bethlehem, two plants that have nearly vanished from the modern landscape. These species depend on the open, rocky conditions preserved here to survive.
