Přírodní park Horní Střela, Nature park in Plzeň-North District, Czech Republic
Přírodní park Horní Střela is a nature reserve in the Plzeň region featuring deep river valleys and extensive forests across rolling terrain. The landscape shows exposed slate rock faces along forested slopes where the meandering Střela River cuts through the valleys.
The protected area was established in 1978 and later expanded in stages to include surrounding territories. The region has a long history of slate quarrying that shaped both the landscape and local economies.
Slate rocks from the park have been quarried for centuries and shaped into roofing tiles for local buildings and structures. This work created a lasting connection between the land and the people who have used its resources to build their communities.
The park has a network of marked walking trails that guide visitors through different areas and connect to nearby villages and landmarks. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and plan ahead since routes vary in difficulty across the hilly and forested terrain.
Isolated basalt outcrops within the park support specialized plant communities adapted to dry conditions that differ from the surrounding forest habitat. These rocky islands create pockets of uncommon vegetation shaped by unique soil and moisture conditions.
