Reduta Jazz Club, Jazz club and theatre venue in central Prague, Czech Republic
Reduta Jazz Club is a jazz club and theatre venue in a historic building on Národní street in central Prague, close to the National Theatre. The room is small and the stage is low, so the audience sits very close to the performers.
The club opened in 1957 and quickly became one of the main centres of Czech jazz life. It stayed open through the following decades despite political restrictions, continuing to draw musicians and audiences alike.
The name Reduta comes from the Latin word for a sheltered retreat, which fits its long role as a gathering place for musicians and listeners. In the evenings, the room fills with the sound of trumpets and double basses, with the audience seated close to the stage at small tables.
Booking in advance is a good idea, as popular evenings fill up fast. The club is in central Prague and easy to reach on foot from the Old Town and other nearby sights.
In 1994, then-US President Bill Clinton played saxophone on stage here alongside a local musician, an event that drew attention around the world. That moment became one of the most talked-about nights in the club's history.
