The birth house of Bedřich Smetana occupies the ground floor of a former castle brewery in Litomyšl. Four interconnected rooms contain period furnishings and personal items that illustrate the composer's early life.
Smetana was born in 1824 in this building, where his father worked as the castle brewer. The house witnessed the arrival of a major figure in Czech musical history.
The rooms show how young Smetana grew up and first encountered music in his family home. Visitors can see how a prosperous craftsman's family lived during the early 19th century.
The house is open from April through September, with guided tours available in multiple languages if you arrange them beforehand. The building sits near Litomyšl Castle and is easy to reach on foot.
The building retains its original Baroque modifications from 1730, featuring decorative sgraffito elements that echo the adjacent castle. These ornaments reveal how the structures in Litomyšl were artistically linked to one another.
