Salesiova výšina, Natural monument in Osek, Czech Republic.
Salesiova výšina is a natural monument featuring large quartzite blocks cut through by a network of intersecting cracks, located at 422 meters (1,384 feet) elevation. These rock formations create distinctive geometric patterns across the hilltop.
Czech authorities designated this site as a protected natural monument in 1986 based on its geological importance. The protection status recognized the scientific value of the rock formations and their prehistoric origins.
The name comes from Abbot Salesius Kruger of Osek monastery, who built a wooden shelter on the summit during the 1800s. This connection to the nearby monastery gives the place significance for visitors interested in local religious heritage.
You can reach the site by following marked hiking paths from Osek město railway station or from the local swimming facility, with parking available at both starting points. The trails are straightforward to navigate and the area is well signed.
The rock surfaces display thousands of fossil imprints from freshwater mussels of the Unio genus, preserving evidence of ancient river ecosystems. These fossils tell the story of a prehistoric waterway that once flowed through this area.
