Roudnice nad Labem Castle, Baroque château in Roudnice nad Labem, Czech Republic
Roudnice nad Labem Castle is a Baroque château in the Bohemian town of Roudnice nad Labem, sitting on a rise above the Elbe River. The building has many rooms, towers, and a formal hall that was converted into a theater, with gardens and adjoining structures completing the complex.
The site began as a Romanesque fortress around 1200, built to control the Elbe crossing. In the 17th century, architects Francesco Caratti and Antonio della Porta transformed it into the Baroque château that stands today.
The complex includes a monastery with the Church of St. Wenceslas, which visitors can still enter today. The spaces show how noble and religious communities shaped the layout and decoration of the buildings over the centuries.
Guided tours are available for the interior, while the gardens can be explored on your own. The grounds are large and some areas involve stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.
The castle has a wine pavilion dedicated to regional Bohemian wines, which is an unusual feature for a property of this kind. It also ranks among the four largest château complexes in the Czech Republic, which becomes clear only once you start walking the full grounds.
