Synagogue in Nová Cerekev, Synagoge in Nová Cerekev, Tschechien
The Synagogue in Nová Cerekev is a building in Pelhřimov District, constructed in 1855 as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The interior features a spacious prayer hall with three aisles framed by women's galleries, a classical Torah ark placed between two columns, and a semi-circular apse with original decorative elements.
A first place of worship was established in 1693, but the current building was constructed in 1855 by architect Štěpán Walser in Romanesque style with Oriental elements. After the deportation of the local Jewish community, the building served as storage space until the Prague Jewish community purchased and restored it, reopening to the public in 2014.
For many years, the synagogue served as the heart of worship and gathering for the local Jewish community. Walking through today, you can see where people prayed together, studied, and held community meetings in the prayer hall and surrounding galleries.
The building is open to visitors and features a permanent exhibition about synagogue architecture and history in the Czech lands. The interior's excellent acoustics make it a venue for regular concerts and cultural events that you can enjoy during your visit.
The building blends Romanesque architecture with Babylonian-Assyrian design elements, an uncommon combination for Central Europe that sets it apart from other regional synagogues. This architectural mix reflects an ambition to create a structure that stood out from typical European designs of its time.
